RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) on Linux

Its very easy to setup RDP on Linux based OS. No need any kind of VNC or extra software for using RDP server. Simply use as Windows RDP. Follow below steps.

  • Install fresh Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10. 32 or 64 Bit
  • Login SSH and run following command.
  • sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
  • sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
  • sudo apt-get install xrdp

Now you are ready to use your Linux RDP 🙂

Installing the Components

Our VPS images are intended to be very minimal to allow the most user customization, so you must install the full group packages for Xwindows and Gnome (the default window manager for most operating systems). For CentOS:


yum groupinstall "X Window System" "GNOME Desktop Environment" vncserver

For Ubuntu (as root):

apt-get install ubuntu-desktop gdm vnc4server
